Interview with Jayde Scott!

Jayde Scott is author of the Ancient Legends and A Witch Rising series, as well as The Divorce Club and Born to Spy.

Hello, Jayde, and thank you for being here! Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Thank you for having me, Lenore. It’s such a pleasure. I’m a born and bred Brit, but I’ve lived all around the world and hence consider myself a bit of a nomad, which reflects a bit in the settings of my novels. As you can probably tell, my stories are all over the place. While I’m best known for creating the Ancient Legends series, which is young adult paranormal romance, I love to dab into unknown waters and try my hand at women’s and teen fiction as well. There are so many fabulous stories to tell that I don’t really want to limit myself to one genre, which is why I prefer to go without a publisher so I can write what I want to write and what my regular readers want to read.

Can you tell us about your love for writing and how it began?
As a child, I was fascinated by the scent and feel of my mother’s romance books and couldn’t learn to read and write fast enough so I could finally write down the stories in my head. I started out with poems and short stories, then moved on to full length fiction when I was a teen. I was an enthusiastic, absorbed writer but could never really finish a story until I discovered my true passion—the paranormal. After that, my love for writing became a consuming obsession.

You have written several books, can you tell us something about them?

My books couldn’t be more different. Even the ones in the series differ in style and voice, which is very much my intention when I write because I want to provide a diverse reading experience. In some way, all my books reveal something about me, from my hopes and dreams to my own experiences and wishful thinking, which makes them special and personal to me.

What do you think inspired your Witch Rising series and your characters?

I’ve always wanted to be a witch, so that wish inspired the story about fourteen-year-old Emily who inherits her grandmother’s legacy and soon finds out spinning magic isn’t as easy as it seems. In fact, she makes one big mistake that opens a portal to the origin of all evil, Black Wood. Now she’s supposed to save the world from the black magic that spreads through Scotland and threatens to destroy the world.

Can you tell us about the world you have created with your Witch Rising series?

The Witch Rising series is also grounded in reality, but there’s also a parallel world which borders on high fantasy with its black magic, mortal trolls, deadly nymphs, and a dark kingdom. The fantasy world is entered through an enchanted mirror but inactive portals can be found all across the country. When the heroine, Emily, unknowingly opens the portals, the fantasy and real world merge, leading to the imminent end of the world, which Emily must prevent.

Can you tell us about the world you have created with your Ancient Legends series?

The Ancient Legends world is a mixture of reality and fiction where supernatural beings live among us without our noticing. They embrace our technology and try to lead a normal life as much as that’s even possible. They also date mortals and have ancient bonds spun by fate with their mortal soul mates, but every bond brings great danger to the mortal soul mate.
You recently released your third book of the series, Ancient Legends, can you tell us something about this series?

Voodoo Kiss, the third book of the Ancient Legends series, is a stand-alone novel that focuses on Sofia, who is a reincarnated voodoo priestess. Sofia’s sister was recently killed. To help her get over her pain, she accompanies her boyfriend to Brazil, where strange things begin to happen. When she’s kidnapped by a bunch of paranormal beings, think vampires and fallen angels, Sofia has to make a difficult decision: trust the sexy demon shape shifter she barely knows whose existence is at risk if he doesn’t get her to do what he wants, which just might involve losing her death, or return to her old life and ignore her true legacy?

You seem to have a great love for the paranormal. Can you tell us what inspired this?

I’m mostly inspired by mythology but also by vampire classics, both books and movies. I love the paranormal because it’s so much more exciting than real life. In mythology and our fantasy, everything seems possible, which inspires me to get out of my comfort zone and write about all the things that would scare me to death in real life.

When do you expect book four will be published in your Ancient Legends series?
I expect Bewitched to be out by February 2012.

What about book two of you Witch Rising series?

Mortal Star, which is Book Two of the Witch Rising series, has entered the editing process. I hope it will be available for purchase Feb. 2012.

Can you tell us a little bit about you ideas for these?

My series couldn’t be more different. The Ancient Legends books are aimed at a more mature audience with the focus on love and solving various mysteries as well as a darker side of fantasy involving legends and death. The Witch Rising trilogy is aimed at teens and follows one main character, Emily, and her journey as a teen witch. On her journey, she has to master spells and embrace her legacy while defeating various villains that threaten to take over the world. There is also a bit of love and romance, but the main focus is on the action parts and the high fantasy world building.

Which do you think came to you first, the character(s), plot idea of these?

I would say the characters. They’re with me long before I find out who they really are and what their story is.

Do you have any other books, or series, in the works?

I have one series in the works and some women’s fiction projects, which shall be released under a pen name some time next year.

Do you have anything you would like to say to your readers?

Thank you to all my wonderful readers for the immense support and encouragement. I received so many lovely messages for Christmas and New Year, which filled me with joy, and today I’d like to thank each and every one of you for giving my books a try.

Do you think any authors have influenced your writing?

Definitely Anne Rice and JRR Tolkien, but also a few others such as Tracy Chevalier and Holly Black.

Jayde Scott's Ancient Legends series is a must read!!

Voodoo Kiss (Ancient Legends, #3)Voodoo Kiss by Jayde Scott

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

In my review of Doomed, I didn't want to give away the loss Cass was forced to endure, as I felt this was one of the major cliff hangers of Doomed and would have needed a spoiler alert, which I steer clear of, so I'm banking on the fact that everyone has read the first two books of this series before reading this one. Jayde is a wonderful writer, and Voodoo's Kiss was the best one in the series yet. I was creeped out by Gael, and the danger I sensed with him sucked me into the story immediately.

In Voodoo's Kiss, Cass needs Sofia to remember her past life as a Voodoo priestess so that she might save her love, who was killed by a vampire in the second book, and break the curse placed on her. You get pulled into this fast paced novel, by Sofia, who keeps getting warned by a crow, can see a demon, one who she's deeply attracted to from the moment she first sets eyes on him, and by the witty Cass, who is a fallen angel, and who is cursed to be a reaper, and then by the vampires from the past books. Throw in lots of wit and humor, and you have one powerful read.

But I was also deeply impressed by the depth of emotion that Sophis showed in her grief and the edge of the sanity, insanity we sometimes walk in our grief, and I enjoyed the deeper spiritual meanings woven into this story as well.

I highly recommend this series to anyone who loves paranormal and fantasy novels alike, and give this series 5 stars as a must read.

Jayde Scott's, Doomed is a must read!

Doomed (Ancient Legends, #2)Doomed by Jayde Scott

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Jayde Scott is an amazing writer, taking you on a tale with a wit that keeps you turning the pages till the end. I cannot remember when I had so much fun reading a book. Doom is a delight, taking you on a journey through hell, literally, where Lucifer's daughter doesn't really agree with her dear old dad. This book is packed with a dark gothic feel, yet full of great humor as Cass goes through the typical trials of any teen, dealing with her parents and falling in love. Doomed was quite unlike anything I've ever read before. I thoroughly enjoyed Doomed, gave it 5 stars, and highly recommend it to anyone who loves fantasy and paranormal reads.

Interview with Mary Ting, and her saga, Crossroads.

Mary Ting is author of the Crossroads Saga as well as Three Best Friends.
Hello Mary. I'm so glad you have joined us here:)

Can you tell us about your love for writing and how it began began? I didn’t have the passion to write a story at all. It just kind of happened when my grandmother passed away. It was a way for me to heal the loss of her. I started from a dream I had in high school. I couldn’t stop writing. These characters became a part of my family. A world I created on my laptop because of my grandmother.

You have written three books, can you tell us something about them?
I wrote Three Best Friends with my daughter. When she found out I was writing a book, she wanted to write a story with me. So we sat by the computer together and created a story that was realistic, things that she did with her friends. It’s cute and funny. This book is self published. I’m hoping someday a traditional publisher will pick it up. Crossroads is my first YA novel and Between is the sequel.

What do you think inspired your Crossroads saga and your characters?
Many people like Davin, which I'm really happy about because his character was inspired by my friend who passed away. He was very likable and was a best friend to all his friends. Patty is my friend from church. She is exactly how I described her, social butterfly who knows everything about her friends and fashion. I named Claudia after a student I once had many years ago. I can still picture her face, just like an angel. When I was much younger, I had a crush on a boy name Michael, but his character is based off my husband, protective, romantic, and silly at times. No... he doesn't have wings...lol!!!

You recently released the second book of the series, Between, can you tell us something about it? Lots of action and romance. You’ll get to know the Twelve. There are more angels on Earth. This is a review I received that gives you an overall feel. “Hang on to your wings, you are in for a thrilling and gripping story about love, promises, and sacrifice.  Everything a sequel should be, Between is a brilliant and lovely tale that is remarkably tender, sexy, poignant, and made the romantic in me swoon.”  - Jennifer Howell, LateBloomerOnline.com

You seem to have a great love for the paranormal. Can you tell us what inspired this? My first paranormal romance novel was Twilight. Afterward, I started reading more. It was a great way to escape from everyday life.

Do you have anything new in the works?
I am working on the third book of Crossroads Saga, but it’s blank…lol!!!

When do you expect book three will be published? Since I also have a day job, I am a kindergarten teacher. I’m also married with two kids, two hamsters and a dog. So…not a clue yet…lol!!! I guess it will depend on how fast my story flows.

Which do you think came to you first, the character(s), plot idea or other?  With Crossroads, I just started from my dream, chapter one. With Between, I had the characters in mind first.

Do you have anything you would like to say to your readers?
I took on a journey not knowing how rewarding it would be for me. I’ve meet so many wonderful people from all over the world through facebook, twitter, goodreads and blog sites. I’ve made everlasting friendship where friendship knows no boundaries. And I have to thank my grandmother who continues to watch over me from Heaven.

Thank you so much for having me!!! And thank you to my readers who are now my friends. Thank you for being my friend!!!

Mary Ting has done it again!!

Between (Crossroads Saga, #2)Between by Mary Ting

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

In a battle of good versus evil, where even the good angels may be tempted by love and power, Mary Ting has done it again! Her newest release, Between, from her Crossroads Saga is fresh, unlike many other angel stories I've ever read. I was drawn in by the beautiful love story between a Claudia and her guardian angel, Michael, in her first book, and the chemistry continued to build between them in this one. This is a powerful, moving story. The mystery of Claudia, who is hunted by dark powers, powers who continue to kill every young woman who carries her name, kept me turning the pages to find out what would happen next. I couldn't put it down! If you love romantic paranormal fantasy, you don't want to miss this one! Between is a must read, and I gave it 5 stars!

Interview and Giveaway with Patti Roberts

Patti Roberts is author of Paradox: The Angels are Here and Progeny of Innocence as well as I Believe

Hello, Patti and thank you for being here! Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?  I grew up in Darwin in the Northern Territory.  So I will always have a special place in my heart for Darwin.  So many wonderful childhood memories.  Twenty years ago I moved to Cairns, Queensland – where the lush, tropical Daintree rainforest meets the beautiful underwater world of the Great Barrier Reef.  Have you packed your bags yet???  In Cairns, winter, if you could call it that lasts for about a week.  There are no white Christmases, but tropical thunderstorms that loom large with heavy black clouds ready to burst.  At night the lightning stretches across the night sky as far as the eye can see.  Blotting out even the brightness of the billions stars overhead.  Beautiful!  If you hate hot sunny days….  Un-pack your bags J  with the tropical storms comes the humidity.  We have a saying for this particular season here in Australia…  It's called the "Troppo" season!

What was your inspiration behind the Paradox Series?  Therapy.  I was feeling very down and misplaced after a failed relationship and I wanted to do something positive….  I needed to do something positive.  I wanted to herd up all my unresolved emotions and put them to good use.  So I went out and bought a new laptop computer and started writing.  Hence the reason Paradox is a dark read.  A little bit EMO!  Writing has been the best therapy and I have never been happier!  I highly recommend writing to anyone that finds themselves in a similar situation.  So to answer your question…  That is how the Paradox Series was born.

Tell us a little bit about your books.  Have you ever wondered about the existence of Angels, if there was a Heaven?  And if you had a Guardian Angel, would they come from Heaven or Hell?  What if Heaven and myths, magic and legends were real!  And what if Heaven was at war and threatened our own existence here on earth…

What would you say is the best part about writing a book?  The wonderful feeling of accomplishment when you have finished.  And secondly, readers reviews that goes something like….  "Loved it.  Can't wait for the next book."  That is pretty awesome.

Where do you get your inspiration?  History – old and new, myths, dreams, legends, and the real world.  There is so much about this world we live in that inspires.  And imagination.  With imagination, there are no limits.

Are there any authors you look up to that influenced your writing?  For the Ancient world parts in Paradox I was inspired by the writing style of George R. R. Martin.  (Game of Thrones)

Do you have any advice for aspiring authors? Read, read, read books from lots of different authors, and write everyday.  Learn the difference between criticism and constructive criticism.  Never be afraid of constructive criticism.  Constructive criticism is a great learning tool.  With out it your writing will not grow.

Describe your book in 3 words.  Emotions, emotions, emotions.

When do you expect book three will be published?  Book 3 in the Paradox Series will be out mid to late 2012.

Can you tell us a little bit about this book?  Book 3 is a continuation of the Paradox Series.  The Ancient World and the New World.

Do you have anything new in the works?  Yes.  A novel I started around the same time as The Paradox Series.  Mirror Image – A David Oxley Novel.  It's a mystery read about a guy that's down on his luck that's stuck in a dead end job… And as David's 'luck' would have it, he ends up in the wrong place at the wrong time.  It should be due for release mid 2012.  It is more of a light, fun read compared to Paradox.

Which do you think came to you first, the character(s), plot idea or other?  In Paradox - Definitely the plot.  In David Oxley – The character that is very loosely based on a real person.

Can you tell us about your other book, I Believe? And how it came about that you wrote it?  I Believe is a book in progress.  It came about because I wanted to give other people an opportunity to have their short stories and beliefs published that otherwise would not have had the opportunity to have their words published.  It is all about real people.  Real Beliefs and real stories.  I offer everyone the opportunity to have their stories published so the ebook is constantly being updated.  It will always be free as an ebook.  When there is enough material to publish a paperback it will be priced so as just to cover expenses.  As soon as it was made available free on Amazon 300+ copies a week were being downloaded onto kindles.

Do you have anything you would like to say to your readers?  I would like to thank everyone that has read any of my books.  Especially those that take the time to write reviews.   Some people put such a great deal of time and effort into writing a review and I find that amazing.  I really appreciate them for spending their valuable time on doing that.  I can't thank them enough.

Progeny of Innocence is a must read!!

Paradox: Progeny Of Innocence (Paradox, #2)Paradox: Progeny Of Innocence by Patti Roberts

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Patti Roberts weaves a wonderful tale of magick and love in her Paradox series. I was pulled in by an 11 year old Grace in the first book, The Angels are Here, who was shattered by the loss her father. Now she is a teen who must find a place in the human world to better understand the spirit world and how to deal with her visions of a young woman who comes from her own past life. Through Patti, you get to travel into the supernatural as fallen angels hunt for Grace, and she begins her journey in the bloom of her life as a young woman getting to know a boy named Damon, all rolled up with learning her way with dealing with spirit.

Patti keeps you on the edge of her seat with a very real as you see these fallen angels through her writing and feel Grace's emotions as they come to life through her words. I didn't want to put this book down as I was pulled into Grace's world, and I gave this book 5 stars as a must read!!
